Here’s how it works locally: you call us or submit the online form, we confirm a pickup window that fits your schedule, and then you simply leave the signed California title and keys with the vehicle. A local towing partner comes to your home, apartment, or workplace in San Diego—running or not, missing smog, failed engine, no problem. In most neighborhoods from Mission Valley and Pacific Beach to National City and Santee, pickups happen within a few business days, depending on routing. More rural addresses on the outskirts of San Diego County may take a bit longer, but you’ll always get a clear estimate before you commit.
How to schedule your free local pickup
1. Tell us about your car and where it sits
Call Wheel Forward or fill out the quick online form with your San Diego address, the vehicle location (garage, driveway, street), and a few details about its condition. We accept most cars, SUVs, trucks, and vans in the San Diego Metro whether they run or not, including vehicles with mechanical issues or expired registration.
2. Choose a convenient local pickup window
Our team checks the tow routes across San Diego—city neighborhoods like Hillcrest or City Heights, coastal areas, and East County—and offers you a pickup window. You pick a day and time range that works. We’ll explain how timing may vary slightly in dense downtown areas versus farther-out communities so you know what to expect.
3. Prepare your title, keys, and access for the driver
Before pickup day, sign your California title where instructed and remove personal items from the car. On the day, place the title and keys in the agreed spot (glove box, under mat, or with a front desk/concierge) and make sure the vehicle is reachable for a tow truck—no blocked driveways or locked gates without a code.
4. Let the local tow operator handle the rest
A nearby towing partner arrives with a flatbed or hook-and-chain truck, loads your vehicle, and completes the donation paperwork. You don’t need to be present as long as we’ve arranged access. In most San Diego Metro locations, your car is picked up within a few business days, and you’ll receive a tax receipt from Wheel Forward by mail.
5. Receive your IRS tax receipt for your donation
After your car is sold, Wheel Forward mails you a tax receipt. You can generally deduct the sale price or at least $500 for qualifying donations, and amounts over $500 use IRS Form 1098-C. While we can’t offer tax advice, we’ll provide the documentation you need so you can talk with your tax professional about your specific situation.
Local pickup gotchas
Tight San Diego streets and flatbed access
Tip: Some areas like Ocean Beach, Golden Hill, and older parts of North Park have narrow streets or steep alleys. Let us know exactly where the car is parked so we can send the right truck and, if needed, plan an alternate pickup spot nearby that’s safe for a flatbed to load your vehicle.
Gated communities, garages, and parking structures
Tip: In communities around UTC, Mission Valley, and newer Chula Vista developments, gate codes and parking garage clearances matter. Share gate codes, concierge details, and floor/space numbers in advance. Tow trucks can’t always clear low parking structures, so we may ask you to move the vehicle to street level or a guest lot on pickup day.
HOA and permit-parking rules
Tip: Neighborhoods in Little Italy, downtown, and some coastal areas use strict permits or HOA rules. Check if a tow truck can stage briefly without being ticketed or blocked. If your HOA or building requires notice, give them a heads-up about the pickup window so the driver isn’t delayed or turned away when they arrive.
Rural or remote San Diego County addresses
Tip: If you’re outside the dense metro—near Ramona, Jamul, Valley Center, or Alpine—pickups can still be free but may take a bit longer to route. Share clear directions and any unpaved road conditions. We’ll set expectations on timing and coordinate a day when a local truck is already in your part of the county.
If at-home pickup is tricky
If at-home pickup is tricky—maybe your car is buried in a tight garage, behind another vehicle, or parked in a structure a flatbed can’t reach—we can often arrange a nearby meeting point. Some donors in downtown San Diego, Pacific Beach, or dense condo areas choose to meet the driver in a nearby open lot or wide side street. In rare cases where access is impossible, we’ll talk through other local solutions, like moving the vehicle to a tow-friendly spot first or scheduling pickup from your mechanic’s shop or workplace instead of your home.

Wheel Forward serves the entire San Diego Metro: from downtown, North Park, and Clairemont to La Jolla, Mira Mesa, Scripps Ranch, Chula Vista, National City, El Cajon, Santee, and beyond. Pickup timing is usually a few business days in central areas; more remote parts of San Diego County may take a bit longer to route. For California titles, you’ll sign as the seller and remove your license plates after pickup if you wish, then you can file a Release of Liability with the California DMV so they know the vehicle has been transferred.
